Having enjoyed Mission’s Unstoppable at their George Street location, we returned to tackle Dr. M at their Pitt Street location. I hadn’t initially intended on doing one of their older rooms, but we had a group of 7 this time (me, Z, J, and 4 of my nieces), and there aren’t many rooms in Sydney that can comfortably fit so many people. We had already played The Game at Next Level, so this was really the only option left.

Dr. M has a bit of a dark backstory which I won’t go into, but suffice it to say that it’s a mad scientist themed room which starts off with your team shackled and separated into two rooms (one of which is dark). Some people might not like this, but I personally enjoyed this aspect of the room and the teamwork required to get the ball rolling.

I wasn’t expecting a lot going in because the room is closing in on its 10th birthday, so I expected it to be worn and lacking in the puzzle department. To my surprise, Dr. M actually held up really well and contained different types of puzzles I had not seen before, many of which are hi-tech and remain hi-tech to this day. There’s also a chemistry-related puzzle I didn’t expect to see in an escape room as well as a couple of dexterity/physical ones. The variety and range of puzzles was what made it super fun for the kids. The only time they got restless was when we found ourselves stuck on a particular puzzle and needed a clue (and of course, the solution was shockingly simple).

Where the room was a little weaker was the theming (you didn’t really get the sense that you were in a mad scientist’s lair), and that some of the puzzles — while clever and impressive from a tech perspective — didn’t really align particularly well with the theme or make sense in the space. But the most important thing is that the kids had a good time, as did I. I’m certain Dr. M would have been one of the best escape rooms around when it was very released, and still remains worthy of a visit especially if you have a larger group.
