Grand Immersia Hotel was our fourth Immersia room and third at their Boisbriand venue. I'm not gonna lie — I was under a complete misapprehension as to what this room was about. Every single escape room I had played with "hotel" or "motel" in its name up to that point either had a ghost or psycho killer in it, so I naturally though this was going to be more of the same. I'm glad to say I was wrong!
Grand Immersia Hotel turned out to be very different to what I was expecting. This was essentially a heist game, but it was also unlike every other heist game I've played to date. In short, you and your team have been kidnapped by terrorists, who force you to break into the eponymous national heritage hotel to commit a heinous crime. And just in case you don't obey, they've placed a ticking time bomb around your neck!
Being the one they tied the bomb to, I felt even more tension and urgency than the rest of the team. As with Immersia's other rooms, this one had a great intro — arguably their best one, setting the the tone right away and making us aware of the mission and the stakes. The videos they produce are always top-notch.
The hotel setting was done very well too, in particular the glorious high-ceiling lobby, the centrepiece of the game. Being a 1920s national heritage hotel, there was a cool Art Deco vibe and old school props and equipment.
The puzzles were pretty good too, mostly in line with the theme except for a couple of more traditional ideas you might see in older-generation games. There was hunt and seek, observation, deduction, communication, and teamwork, and some mathematical stuff too. To me, the puzzle concepts were a less creative here than in some of their other rooms, but they were still engaging and fun.
What I love about Immersia are the little extra attention-to-detail things they sprinkle into their games to elevate them above typical escape experiences. In this room, beyond the aforementioned, they also added a bit of hi-tech espionage, a dash of live-actor interaction, and a moral dilemma — forcing players to make a choice that could impact the ending.
