Sometimes, persistence pays off! Motel Betty was going to be the only playable 2025 TERPECA finalist in Canada that we were going to miss out on (Escaparium's The Family and Rain Corp. were no longer available) due to the 16+ age restriction. I emailed Omventure to ask if they could make an exception and they initially said no, but after some encouragement from other members of the ER community, I decided to give it another shot, putting forth my most persuasive case, including that we were all TERPECA voters who had played intense horror rooms before — and it worked!
Apparently, the concern was not necessarily that the game would be "too scary" for under-16s, but that they had to find a live actor who was comfortable interacting with kids given that responses in stressful situations can be unpredictable. So was all that effort worth it just to play the game said to be the scariest in Toronto?
Yes! Motel Betty was a very strong horror game that had just about everything an effective scary room ought to have.
The space was big and felt massive, making use of clever configurations, transitions, and requiring players to circle back to previous areas to create the illusion of an even more expansive set, though the constant movement felt meaningful and never repetitive.
The theming was solid — you're not going to get anything jaw-dropping in a run-down motel, but the decor shaped a creepy atmosphere that persisted throughout the entire game. However, it was naturally quite dimly lit most of the time, so the details were harder to appreciate. Another nitpick was the lack of a proper ceiling, which slightly affected immersion.
The puzzles were another strength. This was a linear game, but all 4 of us always had something to do, as teamwork was often essential or at least hugely beneficial. I think it can be done with 3 players but you'd really need to hustle for a couple of the puzzles.
I liked that the puzzles tested a wide variety of skills while remaining mostly diegetic to the theme. There was the usual hunt and seek, but also plenty of observation puzzles that required pattern recognition and an ability to follow instructions and identify sequences. While there were some "process puzzles" that we're not the biggest fans of, mixing them with logical deduction, tactile, and even abstract puzzles kept the experience diverse and interesting.
I'm not gonna lie — I don't really remember the story of the game, but it was a fairly standard horror movie plot with ghosts and demons.
The live actor definitely heightened the tension and elevated the overall experience. As usual, it's the apprehension from the live actor suddenly popping up that's scarier than the live actor itself. To Omventure's credit, they didn't overplay the live actor card like some venues do, and ensured that the interactions were not excessive or cheap. I would say most regular players would find the room quite scary, but those who have played intense horror rooms in Europe or Asia would likely find it rather mild.
We didn't get stuck on any puzzle for very long and ended up finishing this 2-hour game with 45 minutes to spare, which was a surprise as we were so engaged in the experience that we lost track of time.

Verdict: Expansive supernatural horror room that is more immersive and engaging than your typical spooky game thanks to the longer duration, multiple spaces, live actor, and diversity of puzzles. Based on TERPECA results, enthusiast reviews, and our own playthrough, this is likely the best actively scary escape room experience in Ontario and one of the best in all of Canada.
