After finishing up our wonderful time in Toronto, we packed our bags and kicked off the drive toward Montreal. It was the long drive (5+ hours), but there was something to look forward to around the midway point — the highly touted, oft-recommended Improbable Escapes in Kingston, which gained attention worldwide by making their games playable remotely during the pandemic. Escape room owners and enthusiasts alike rave about their games, but the distance from both Toronto and Montreal make it more difficult for players to visit and in turn earn nominate them for TERPECA.
Improbable Escapes has 2 locations an opposite ends of Kingston — HQ and Wonderland. After liaising with the staff in advance, we decided to squeeze in 3 games, all at their newer Wonderland location (even though their newest game is currently being built at HQ).
First up, Neverland: Heist on the High Seas, a Peter Pan-themed room aboard the Jolly Roger! How was it?
Neverland was a very solid and fun family-friendly room with a well-designed set and a nice mix of puzzles.
It was not a huge room, but the designers made good use of its space and high ceilings to make the area feel bigger than it really is.
The theming gave off serious Disney vibes, with sturdy, pretty decor and well-maintained puzzle props. Without giving too much away, the aesthetics of the second half of the game were especially pleasing, especially for a pirate room.
According to the website, the room is considered "hard". There was quite a range of different puzzles, including traditional locks but also tech and tactile puzzles. There were a couple of puzzles we had not seen before and thought were really cool, but there was also one puzzle that may have been a little finicky, as it took us several tries with the same inputs before the solution triggered properly.
We found the puzzles in the first half of the game to be quite easy and straightforward, but the difficulty definitely ramped up in the second half, and we struggled particularly when attention to detail was important and the signposting was not very clear. I will say that teamwork is essential, but due to the sizes of some of the smaller spaces, I would not recommend more than 5 or 6 people at most.
Despite some of the advanced tech, it did feel like a more traditional room in the sense that there wasn't a lot of special effects or theatrical moments, and the ending was somewhat anticlimactic.
On the whole, this was a well-crafted room with a distinctive aesthetic and cute, cheerful vibe. It was very solid across the board and a fantastic start to our visit to Improbably Escapes!
