Missing Klues (Canberra, Australia)

Time limit: 60 minutes

Age limit: None (drug themes and mild coarse language)

Player limit: 1-8

Difficulty: 7/10

Date visited: June 2025

If Cold Case, our first room at Missing Klues, was the appetiser, then our second room, Overdose, was the main course. Ranked as the third best room in Canberra on Morty as of the date of our visit, we naturally had very high expectations. The concept was also a very intriguing one: You are gang members tasked with finding drugs and cash in an old-school American diner. One of our favourite rooms in Melbourne, Mafia: The Golden Ring, also had a diner theme, so that only added to our excitement.

Our initial impression of Overdose was strong — the theming and props were a step up from Cold Case, and generally on the same level as some of the better escape rooms we've done. It was colourful and stylish, albeit with some signs of wear and tear. As such, the atmosphere was just okay, stronger in the first half of the room than the latter.

I would say the strength of the the room lay in its puzzle design. Without giving too much away, this was a room that challenged all of our senses, utilising a wide variety of different puzzle types and mechanics to keep us on our toes and keep things interesting. While the nature of the puzzles don't necessarily make sense in the space, most of the props that form the puzzles do, and that's mostly good enough for me.

Even though this is technically an easier room than Cold Case, we actually found it a little harder, even needing a clue towards the end — largely because there was an item from the past that the kids had never seen and had no idea what it was! This oversight also meant that it kind of messed up the puzzle order a little bit, but everything worked itself out in the end. The clues at Missing Klues were delivered through a walkie talkie system, which is not my favourite type because it can sometimes be hard to hear clearly.

Apart from the drugs, there was also a voluntary side quest to find as many bundles of hidden cash as possible. The kids found this to be quite fun, and we finished one short of the maximum number. Our GM was kind enough to let us know this and allowed us to look around and find that final bundle after the game had already concluded.

On the whole, we found Overdose to be a fun room with some strong elements and puzzle ideas. But perhaps because our expectations were too high/unrealistic, it did not really wow us like I had hoped. E, in particular, thought both the rooms at Missing Klues were a little underwhelming. Nonetheless, we had a good first day in Canberra, and it as it turned out, it was only going to get better from here!

PS: While we did this room with two kids (11 and 13), it should be noted that it might not be for all families due to the drug themes and a tiny bit of mild coarse language.
