Straight after completely Pharaoh at the Ximen branch of Miss Game, we headed downstairs to do Prison Break back-to-back. This is basically Taiwan’s version of Escape from the Prison at Scrap in Tokyo, Japan — a fun little 10-minute escape room that we loved.
While there are indeed similarities, Prison Break turned out to be a unique experience in its own right. For starters, it is double the length at 20 minutes, and starts off by splitting your team into two separate cells and handcuffing you. As such, you not only have to escape from your cell, you also have to unlock your shackles and escape the room itself — a triple escape!
It also had a unique background story set in 1920s Taiwan, during its Japanese colonial era, so the theming and props all aligned with that period.
We ended up really enjoying this one, albeit with a huge caveat. The theming was solid, the puzzles were cool, the flow was smooth, and teamwork was essential. We got out with over 8 minutes to go, but felt challenged enough to still feel a sense of urgency and accomplishment.
While the majority of puzzles either did not require language or had both Chinese and English text, the main issue we had with the room was that — unless we were not given the full English version — there were at least two puzzles that required being able to read Chinese characters, including one that was unlikely able to be swapped out props for an English version. Fortunately, our team did have someone who could read Chinese, or else we might have gotten stuck.
