Disclaimer: Our second room at Escape Rooms Wellington was provided by owner Steve free of charge. He saw that I had booked his 2 other rooms and was kind enough to throw in The Diamond Heist on the house. That said, this in no way affected my thoughts on the room itself:
This was another fun room. It had decent size, multiple spaces, and, as advertised, a laser maze at the end (more on this later).
We’ve played a few heist rooms, and they’re usually set in a bank or museum, but this one was unique in that it’s set in some rich Indian guy’s palace. This offered the opportunity to create some interesting puzzles and different theming.
As with Operation Beehive, the set was probably the weakest aspect of the room, as much of the decor looked kind of old and worn. Constructing an escape room is expensive, and when you have to do everything yourself, sometimes you have no choice but to go with the second hand furniture, DYI props, and cheap stuff purchased on Taobao. Aesthetically, it was good enough for me, but players should not expect a super polished build.
The puzzles were again the highlight of the room. Not too few, not too many. Highly varied and clever, with multiple “aha” moments. Not too difficult but not too easy.
The hints were delivered via a hybrid voice-of-god system where the GM could see the players at all times and sent through hints on a screen in the room, though we didn’t need any this time.
With a better handle on the style and difficulty of the puzzles after Operation Beehive, we were really switched on in this room and worked together seamlessly, blitzing through every puzzle with only one minor instance where momentum was halted briefly.
We’ve played several rooms with laser mazes, and this was definitely one of the better ones, as the lasers were real (ie., touching them had actual negative consequences) and it was not at all easy to get through all of them.
With two agile kids on the team, we were able to beat the laser maze relatively quickly, which I believe was the reason why we managed to break the all-time record for this 9-year-old game!
