After a delightfully scary time at Scram’s The Witching Hour at Macquarie Park, we decided to try out Scram's Parramatta venue during the school holidays. First up, The Wizard Chambers, not to be confused with Escape This’s The Wizard's Chamber.
This is a Harry Potter-style room in which your team is locked by an opposing team in the wizard school dormitory, and you must find your way out within the next hour to make the Quidditch match.
I would call The Wizard Chambers an average room. It was a little on the old side, with props and decor that were solid but fall far short of impressive, paling in comparison to Escape This’s flashy The Wizard’s Chamber.
As for the puzzles, they were decent and more challenging than I expected, though one of the reasons we struggled was because our gamemaster had given us a lot of instructions about all the things that we shouldn’t touch. As a result, we were not as thorough in searching and examining the props, which led us to miss things that should have been easy to spot.
That said, we still enjoyed our time and had fun. In particular, there were a couple of pretty cool puzzles I had not seen before. Most of the puzzles led to old-school padlocks of various types, which I will never get sick of.
Unfortunately, a crucial prop malfunctioned in our room, and something that was supposed to be locked ended up becoming the very first thing I opened as soon as I entered the room. This led to an awkward conversation with our gamemaster, who had to come in and try to fix the problem — and we simply had to go on, pretending none of it never happened.
What made it worse was that she forgot her walkie-talkie in the room, and had to come back a second time to grab it. Not that the room was super immersive in any case, but that did further take us out of the experience. It’s regretful that, in a room that has very little tech, one of the only electronic items malfunctioned.
Escape time: 41 minutes
Verdict: A fairly standard room that’s beginning to show its age, though Harry Potter fans might find that they have a soft spot for it.
