On Canada Day, we got out of Niagara Falls early after going on the zipline and the cruise and before the crowds started flooding in. The drive to Mississauga was surprisingly smooth, and we had plenty of time to enjoy a long lunch before heading to Escape from the 6 to play Volcano Views: Aerial Tours, which we heard was quite physical. How did we fare?
This was such a fun, creative room, full of cool ideas and physical puzzles.
The intro was a background video with what I assume is an Aussie tour guide (maybe Kiwi?)... the accent was a bit iffy, but it was all in good fun. In short, we were catching a tourist flight to see some volcano views — what could possibly go wrong?
The game itself begins with a simulated flight, but before long we had to find a way to reach out for help before the volcano erupts!
The room was quite big and tall, and the theming was mostly very good — from the plane to the island and beyond, I could see the kind of atmosphere they were trying to craft. The decor was showing obvious signs of wear and tear, but everything was in working order.
The puzzles were interactive and the majority of them required physical movement of some kind. This was not a room where we all stood around trying to figure out brain-teasers. All four of us were constantly running around all over the place, either moving things or trying to get things across to different places. It felt incredibly frantic but still required us to process information and activate our problem-solving skills.
There were a couple of memorable moments that stood out — one involved clever use of media and effects, and the other was a physical challenge of sorts (which we were told you could opt out of if so desired).
The air conditioning was strong, but we were still sweating by the end of it thanks to all the physical activity. At the time, it was the most physical room I had ever played (though this would only last another 2 days).
A TERPECA nominee for the past 3 years, this is obviously a really good game, but I feel it could have been a TERPECA finalist or even winner had it been built with a bigger budget. The ideas are fantastic, but some of the execution and aesthetics could have been more effective and immersive.
