Our third room at Escaparium Laval was also their most mysterious. I had heard rave reviews about Wardrobe for Sale dating back to a couple of years ago, but everyone who has played the game has remained very tight-lipped about what goes beyond its simplistic premise. So to respect this custom, I will not be divulging any spoilers either, though I can still go into what we thought about certain elements of the game.
This was a gorgeous, fantastical, narrative-driven room and Escaparium's most family-friend TERPECA-ranked game at their Laval venue.
The theming was a standout aspect of the room. With Disney-level design and craftsmanship, the decor was colourful, whimsical, and delightfully cute. We collectively gasped when we first stepped into the set, and gave a couple more involuntary "wows" later on during specific moments and reveals.
Another strength was the lighting, sound design, and especially the exquisite animatronics. These were not just to deliver cinematic moments but formed an integral part of the story and the puzzles, adding to the sense of awe and wonder.
Speaking of puzzles, they were diegetic and plenty of fun. The massive opening section was multi-linear and allowed us to divide and conquer, but as the game dived deeper into the story, the gameplay became more linear, though it still enabled us to explore individually and required us to work as a team.
As with many of Escaparium's games, Wardrobe for Sale integrated their GM into the game as part of the live acting, infusing an extra layer of immersion, interactivity, and lots of humour and laughs.
The way they did it here was simply brilliant, playing around with scale and perspective to deliver dramatic cut scenes you watch from a distance, but also theatrical moments that players can be a part of.
I was astounded by the amount of work our GM had to put in to play multiple characters while keeping track of our progress. You can tell that the staff at Escaparium — many of whom are actors and improv experts — really love their job, and that passion shines through in their performances.
One thing we'll always remember about this room was one of its transitions, which was both unexpected and completely magical. I still think it's probably the best transition of any escape room we've experienced.
With a duration of 2 hours, this is Escaparium's second longest room, but the time absolutely flew by for us. The ending could have been a bit more climactic but narrative-wise it ended on a strong note.
