Our third and final room at Improbable Escapes in Kingston was the Alice in Wonderland-themed Down the Rabbit Hole. We've played this kind of theme before and it's never been one of my favourites, but this was Improbable's newest room and their reputation for delivering the goods speaks for itself. So we chose this over their older game, Seven Dwarves: Mining Mission, though if we had the time we would have definitely played all of them, including their other games at their HQ location across town. Anyway, here are my thoughts:

  • Down the Rabbit Hole was an absolutely gorgeous game that captured the whimsical Alice in Wonderland vibe and characters perfectly.

  • As usual, the decor and props were extremely well made, like it was transported directly from Disneyland. The furniture, the cute creatures, and especially the tableware and foods were so beautiful, brimming with details and colours. Improbable already set a very high bar, but I think the theming of this one was definitely the best out of the 3 rooms we played that day.

  • The puzzles were where we thought the game could have been a bit stronger. We initially thought it might have been multilinear because we were presented with so many props at the same time, but it turned out to be a very linear room. If we had known this from the start, we wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to do puzzles that couldn't be done yet.

  • This was a padlock free room, so all of the puzzles were tech-based. There was quite a bit of logical deduction, but also many process puzzles that involved lights and sounds. They were still fun and mostly challenging, though we did find some of them slightly repetitive, as you needed to do the same thing several times but with variations or added difficulty.

  • There was one listening puzzle towards the end that we didn't like at all, as it was not very clear on what we had to do and felt tedious to complete. But when we eventually got through it (with some spamming and guessing and checking), the fun climax made up for it.

  • On the whole, I would say this room is definitely geared more towards younger kids and families. The theming is very child-friendly, and while the puzzles can be challenging, kids can definitely still participate, particularly on the process puzzles that simply require repeating a sequence of sounds or lights correctly — and especially on the grand finale.
