Fox in a Box (Bowral, Australia)

Time limit: 60 minutes

Age limit: Recommended 11+ (child adaption available)

Player limit: 2-6

Difficulty: Low

Date visited: June 2026

With the kids getting a pupil free day from school, we decided to take advantage and head to Bowral (about 90 minutes from Sydney) for an overnight escape adventure! The newest Fox in a Box franchisee opened up towards the end of the last year and currently has 4 rooms. Having already played Zodiac Killer on the Gold Coast, we booked their 3 other rooms, starting with Life Sentence (known as Prison Break at some other Fox in a Box venues). Here are my thoughts.

  • As expected, Life Sentence was a very solid and fun room. Fox in a Box is a great franchise, and we're always confident that their games have a baseline level of quality across the board.

  • The theming and atmosphere were similar to the level of the other Fox in a Box games — well-made and sturdy, but nothing too flashy. As this franchisee was very new, everything looked immaculate.

  • What I especially liked about the design of the room was its simplicity and efficiency — there weren't any red herrings, so just about everything we could see and touch was relevant to the game. This allowed us to focus on only the relevant things and greatly attributed to the smooth flow.

  • We've played quite a few prison escape games to date and this one felt like more of a traditional room but it also had some clever and diegetic puzzles requiring communication and teamwork.

  • As with a lot of these prison games, we started off separated into two teams in opposing cells, and had to start off finding ways to combine our eyes and resources to solve a variety of puzzles before we could be reunited.

  • Even though the difficulty level was rated "low", I still think it presented enough of a challenge for us experienced players. Interestingly, some of the puzzles could be solved in more ways than one, and as it turned out, the way we solved a couple of them was not how the designers had intended.

  • Given this was a relatively new establishment, we were able to break the all-time record, finishing with over 34 minutes remaining. That said, it did not feel like we were shortchanged at all as we had a lot of fun and were engaged throughout.

Verdict: A very solid traditional prison escape-themed room with efficient theming, smooth flow, and puzzles that were more clever than we had expected!
