Limitless Escape in Taipei’s Gongguan district is one of the highest-rated and most-played Taiwanese escape rooms on Morty, probably because it is owned by brothers who lived in the US for a long time and is playable in flawless English.

As at the date of this review, they only have two rooms (a third one is in the works and will either have to be built in a new location or replace an existing room). The first one we played was Prison Break (their slightly “easier” room), which incidentally has the exact same name as the very last room we played at Miss Game!

The similarities ended there though, as this Prison Break had a fun and topical North Korean theme and was a full 60-minute experience. After a professionally produced intro video completely on English, we were ushered into a North Korean prison and tasked with stealing some very important state secrets!

The theming of the room itself was just okay — adequate but not particularly extravagant, detailed, or impressive. That said, given that we were technically in North Korea, the slightly dated, no-frills decor somehow added to the overall vibe. The first-gen look and design won’t blow anyone away, but it does the job.

Where Prison Break shined was its puzzle ideas and design. The start of the game was a really cool gimmick, and we were soon presented with a wide assortment of puzzles, including some that really required thinking outside the box and could not be solved unless you work as a team. One particular challenge had us scratching our heads and trying all sorts of things until E put her practicality to good use and came up with the right idea, but the execution proved to be a wild struggle as we kept failing for quite a long time. There was also one mechanism in the room that we had encountered a few times in other escape rooms before, but this was the first time that it actually worked and was not there just for show! There were quite a few “a-ha” moments in this one.

We ended getting out with just a little over 6 minutes to spare, asking for one clue and receiving a couple of others unprompted. This was actually a very challenging room with a 30-50% success rate, and an average escape time of 65 minutes (yes, longer than what is technically permitted!). The GM spent some time going through each of the puzzles again at the end, so we would understand the design better and just in case any of us missed out on solving specific puzzles. Having played 8 rooms at 5 different establishments during our Taiwan trip, I can confidently say that Limitless Escape is the gold standard when it comes to English-friendly escape rooms in Taipei.
