Project R.E.S.E.T. was our fifth room at Immersia and the fourth at their Boisbriand location. It's also Immersia's highest-rated game on Morty, so expectations were high. Did the game live up to them?
This was such a cool room with an ingenious set and a clear objective in its game design. Set in 2035, it leans into the metaverse craze from a few years back to create a story about metacriminals (you and your team!) who can redeem themselves through the R.E.S.E.T. (Rehabilitation, education and self-awareness of errors through technology) program.
The theming of the room was simple and fantastically futuristic, with clean, sharp visuals and colours. There was a lot of tech, but it's also balanced with plenty of retro touches that make it compelling yet nostalgic. It's not a big room but there's a good reason for that, and in any case did not detract from our enjoyment of the game.
As with Immersia's other games, this one also had a well-produced intro video that was both narratively immersive and informative.
This one also has a live actor, and ours was super awesome and hilarious, enhancing the experience the way that great live actors can.
The puzzles were thematic and fun, and some of them were actually quite tricky. I absolutely loved the final puzzle of the game because it utilised certain skills I had honed throughout my childhood, and it was funny watching the kids' stunned reactions.
Without giving too much away, this game has a very unusual and magical gameplay gimmick that players may find confusing and disorienting at first. But once you figure out it, everything make sense and it becomes super fun but also gradually raises the stakes, as each mistake you make could become more and more costly. Our GM even gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the mechanics after the game, which only deepened our appreciation for the game's clever design.
In any case, I can understand if the game design is the reason why players dislike this room. If it takes you too long to figure it out or if you keep making mistakes, the game can become frustrating or even tedious.
Project R.E.S.E.T. is one of the most distinctive games we've played to date, and when you've played so many, these are the ones you remember. Granted, it's not for everyone, but those who manage to connect with the game's vision and bold design will likely love it as much as we did.
