It was only a few days before our scheduled trip to Scram Penrith that I discovered they had just opened a brand new room called The Butcher, a huge surprise considering their previous room, Plagued, was released not that long ago. Being the escape room degenerates that we are, I simply had to find a way to squeeze The Butcher into our schedule. Did I make the right decision?
Absolutely! The Butcher was incredible, easily the best of all the Scram rooms we had done to date, a notch above in every facet.
The backstory is that people have been disappearing lately, and you suddenly find yourself among the missing. Let’s just say you better find a way out in 60 minutes, or else you’ll discover why your kidnapper is nicknamed “The Butcher”.
Minor spoiler alert, which the GM reveals in the briefing before you enter the room: The first section of the room is pitch black. There’s a few rooms in Australia that utilise this concept, though we have yet to play one, so it was nice to get a taste of it here.
This was a big room with multiple spaces, made to feel even bigger due to clever space utilisation. The design of a particular piece of furniture was especially brilliant.
The theming was superb in every section of the room, really enhancing the immersion and creepy atmosphere. The way the tension ratcheted up reflected the thought and care that must have gone into the design.
This was a mildly scare room (by our standards) due to the presence of the live actor, though our GM told us that some groups were so terrified that they ended up cowering in the corner.
One player gets separated from the pack at some point in the game (for us, it was me!), and there’s a reason why teams are told to send their bravest one.
We loved the puzzles in this room. Every section featured a different variety of puzzles and the flow was super smooth. They were challenging but not overly difficult, mostly linear but required teamwork and communication. I’m not usually a big fan of dexterity puzzles, but the one they had here was a lot of fun.
Having played 7 Scram escape rooms to date across 3 different locations, we can confidently say The Butcher was the most fun. In fact, we couldn’t think of a single piece of constructive feedback to give to our GM when she asked for it at the end. While I’m sure tweaks can and will be made, the game is already highly polished.

Verdict: A tense, exhilarating experience from start to finish, The Butcher sets a new high-water mark for Scram escape rooms and establishes itself as one of the best games in Greater Sydney.
