The school holidays are always the perfect opportunity to play more escape rooms! On this October day, we decided to make the drive out to Penrith to play 4 games in a row at Scram, including Prison Island and their brand new room, The Butcher.
First up, their Harry Potter-style magic room, The Sorcerer’s Secret.
This was a fun, light-hearted, kid-friendly room that ticked a lot of boxes.
The backstory is that there are three magical artefacts you must find in an hour before dark wizards start searching for them. Full disclosure: I literally just had to look this up because I couldn’t remember any of this, meaning the narrative aspect of this room was not particularly strong.
The set design and theming were surprisingly excellent, much better than the Scram rooms we played in Parramatta, and especially when compared directly to the magic-themed room there, The Wizard Chambers. The props all looked professionally crafted, textured, and durable, and thought had clearly been put into the gorgeous colour scheme, especially in one of the sections.
The puzzles were on the easier-to-moderate side, straightforward enough for beginners and kids to get through (maybe with a couple of hints), and challenging enough to prevent experienced players from getting bored or smashing through it too quickly. We didn’t have much trouble with it, though there was one tactile puzzle that we struggled with a little longer than we would have liked.
This felt like a pretty big room because of the multiple spaces, each of which had distinctly different décor. Our team of 4 was the perfect size, though 2-6 players would be fine. They have an identical version of this room, so any more than 7 players and I would suggest booking both and going head to head.

Verdict: The magic/wizard theme feels like it’s been overdone and doesn’t really do much for our team, but this was definitely one of the better ones thanks to the pretty aesthetics and flowing puzzles.
