After the exhilarating adventure that is The Mine, we headed into our second room at Riddle Room, The Dungeon.
This one was more of a traditional escape room where you enter with your eyes closed and start off chained to the wall. We've experienced this gimmick a few times now, so it wasn't anything that caught us off guard.
Most of the action in The Dungeon took place in the same space we started off in (which is quite big), but don't let that put you off. This was a great room.
For starters, the theming and atmosphere were impressive and really made you feel like you were in a medieval dungeon. A lot of escape rooms are too dimly lit to see properly, but that wasn't the case here. Being able to see is really an underrated quality!
Secondly — and in my opinion its biggest strength — the room had fantastic puzzle design and flow. There was good variety, with a blend of traditional locks, mag locks, and hi-tech mechanisms that were well-hidden and did not feel out of place. There was one section where we had to divide and conquer two parallel paths, before converging again to complete the remainder of the room. I thought this was pretty cool too. Everything in the room suited the theme and added to the puzzle-solving and immersion.
Even though the room was considered slightly harder than The Mine, we ended up escaping in less than half the allotted time and coming within a couple of minutes of the room record. We probably could have gotten there but for me and E getting stuck on one puzzle, and J insisting on doing a physical puzzle by himself despite failing multiple times. In fact, we got out so fast that we weren't even sure we had finished when we opened the final door... until we heard our GM bounding down the corridor trying to get to us, sweating and panting like he was having an asthma attack!
