Notwithstanding a somewhat underwhelmed by Kingdom Besieged, we returned to Expedition Escape Rooms in Redfern to tackle their flagship room, the TERPECA-nominated The Forgotten Son. And we are so glad we did, because it’s an excellent room!
This is a unique Australian outback-themed room with a creepy atmosphere and a supernatural twist. Everything from the theming and atmosphere to the production value and puzzles were all a step up in quality compared to Kingdom Besieged, and you can really tell that a lot of thought has been put into crafting an immersive experience.
The use of light and shadow, and especially sound, was on point, crafting a spooky atmosphere and some minor jump scares, enough to put you on edge a little bit but nothing that will make you crap your pants. You can actually tell your GM if you want to dial the scares up or down (we told our awesome GM Maddie to crank it up to the max).
The puzzles flowed well and in line with the theme — nothing felt like it was out of place. There were a couple of puzzles that required dexterity and some light physical activity, which I liked because they did not feel gratuitous and actually made sense in the space. Our kids both enjoyed this aspect of the game. Not a super hard room overall but definitely has a few challenging puzzles that can trip you up. If you manage to complete the game in time, your GM can give you some numbers on how you performed compared to other teams of the same size or among all groups (we slayed).
The Forgotten Son turned out to be a very fun experience for the family that we all enjoyed. In fact, we are now thinking of giving Expedition’s Gladesville premises a try.
