The Longest Night

This was the final game of our Quebec City side trip. We weren't initially going to play it, as we had planned to head to Shawinigan to play Escaparium's TERPECA-winning The Family. But when that game unfortunately closed down, we pivoted to The Curse of the Tiki Lounge, the new real-life escape room from at-home game company The Society of Curiosities in Trois-Rivières (halfway between Montreal and Quebec City). Sadly, they couldn't get that game ready for us either due to "unforeseen circumstances". Plan C was Eliviascape's new horror room, but that turned out to be a few weeks away from being a few weeks away, so we were left with Plan D: Eliviascape's oldest available room, The Longest Night (their old Mayan-themed room was already retired to make space for the new game). Did we like it?

• Yes, The Longest Night is a good spooky horror game, but playing it AFTER their two newer games, Abstraction and especially Judgment Day, was probably not the best idea. Those two games were just so much more advanced, polished, and memorable, which really took off some of the shine of this one.

• The story behind The Longest Night is a common one — there's a raging storm, and your group has to seek temporary refuge in an old, creepy mansion. What could possibly go wrong?

• We did not love the start of the game, which was an incredibly dark space with basically one simple puzzle. But due to the near-pitch-black darkness, it became a very challenging puzzle that felt like more of a time waster than a fun idea. We were told after the game that this initial section was something they added to the game only a few weeks ago, as a different section of the room had to be taken away to make space for their new room.

• Fortunately, the set got much better once we entered the mansion itself. It's not a particularly big space and was easily the smallest of Eliviascape's rooms, but the decor was aesthetically fitting for a spooky old mansion, from the wallpaper and the paintings to the furniture and ornaments. Coupled with the dim lighting and sound effects, the atmosphere was on point.

• The puzzles were solid — thematic but more in the style of traditional games, with a fair bit of searching around for visual clues. The story does gradually unfold as you solve more puzzles, but it was a fairly typical narrative for a room of this type.

• Due to the recent changes, the room was not 100% ready. There was some audio in the game that had not yet been translated from French into English, and a certain area that was supposed to light up as a signpost for a particular puzzle didn't actually light up, so we had no idea what we had to do and ended up having to ask for a hint.

• Still, this was a relatively straightforward room that we cleared with around 25 minutes to spare. The game ended kind of abruptly, the way that many older-generation games do. But the endings of Abstraction and Judgment Day were so awesome that the difference did feel more stark.

• On the whole, The Longest Night was a very solid room and we enjoyed playing it. As far as traditional haunted house escape rooms go, this was definitely one of the better ones, and I expect it to get even better once they complete all the modifications. But for visitors to Eliviascape, I would definitely recommend playing this one first before their other games. This is more of a reflection of just how good their later games are than a slight on the quality of this one.

Verdict: While not as spectacular or memorable as Eliviascape's newer horror games, The Longest Night is still a very solid haunted house room with strong theming and an immersive atmosphere.
