Our second room at Daydream Adventures was the highly touted Botanica Greenhouse. This room is slightly older than Brimley Manor but not by a whole lot, so there's not much separating them in terms of newer tech or design concepts. We decided to play it second due to recommendations we got from enthusiasts and escape room owners. It just missed out on being a TERPECA Finalist last year by just one nomination, and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it this year. These are my thoughts on the room:

  • Botanica Greenhouse is one of the most dazzling and distinctive rooms we've ever played. It stood out on our Canada trip for its unique sci-fi botanical theme as well as Daydream's renowned handmade props, fantastical colour palette, and lighthearted humour. I already mentioned Daydream's colour palette in my Brimley Manor review, but here it works even better because of the botanical theme.

  • I thought the story was cool. You and your team have won tickets to prestigious Interstellar Botanical Expedition and the famed Botanica Greenhouse, where scientists experiment on alien plant life and hybrid botanical technology. But of course, something is off when you arrive... We found the narrative easy to follow and enjoyed the twists and turns that were gradually revealed as we uncovered more clues from solving the puzzles.

  • The room is set in a fairly large area and can fit a lot of players (up to 10 according to the website), but I still think 4 is the optimal number due to the nature of some of the puzzles.

  • The theming is a huge highlight of this game but not the only highlight. The giant, unusual plants are impressive artistic creations. More than just pretty to look at, some of them are backed by animatronics and form part of the interactive puzzles. The room exudes a Little Shop of Horrors vibe, though it's as though the plants have been beautified with a colourful Instagram filter.

  • The puzzles were fantastic too. There was the typical observation, counting, hunt and seek, etc., but also logic, tactile, reaction, memory, and physical puzzles, many of which required teamwork. We found it to be a good mix with low repetition, solid signposting, and smooth flow (unless you miss some obvious details or props right in front of your eyes like we did!). We did get a pointer from our GM at one stage because we did something when it was too early to trigger anything, and then didn't think to do it when we actually needed to.

  • On the whole, Botanica Greenhouse was a delight to play. It was a hi-tech, aesthetically pleasing experience with great choices in music too. There were some challenging puzzles but the overall difficulty wasn't too bad. Even with a couple of stumbles we completed it with around 25 minutes to spare, so casual players and families shouldn't have much trouble escaping in time with a hint or two.
